Hey Skateboard enthusiasts,
The Waterbury Skatepark Coalition would like to thank all of you who have donated to help bring a new state-of-the-art concrete skatepark to Waterbury. Your generosity helps bring us closer to breaking ground. The Coalition has been working on this project for 4 years! Here’s the scoop.
Yes, we changed direction when we realized the Hope Davey Skatepark was worn (in a positive way from all the use!) and unsafe. The directional change from focusing on a larger skatepark down near the ice rink to rebuilding the Hope Davey Skatepark became our focus. With the help of volunteers and the Town, we deconstructed the original park this past October. The plan is to rebuild 4000 s.f. skatepark, double the size of the original Hope Davey Skatepark, and it will be concrete.
The Skatepark Coalition has been working with the Waterbury Recreation Committee, the Recreation Director, the Town Manager, and the Select Board. We recently went before the development review board for our first hearing regarding acquiring the permit needed. All went well and we are hopeful that we will be walking away with the permit at the next hearing.
The Coalition was disappointed with the news in February that we were not successful in our application for a State VOREC grant. However, we received a $50,000 donation from an anonymous donor and another $15,000 donation, along with many other smaller donations that are trickling in. We are very grateful for these donations and are currently looking into other grants and avenues of funding.
The Coalition is committed to ensuring the success and sustainability of this endeavor. We recently decided to hire Standard Construction (SC)as the design-build firm. Together, with SC, and the community input, we will soon be sharing the design of the park with you. SC is locally owned and has built skate parks both here in Vermont and out of state. And are skateboarders!! Our goal is to keep all involved in the building/design of the new Hope Davey Skatepark at the local level. The design will take into account beginners to seasoned riders as well as ADA accessibility
We are hoping to break ground ASAP.  We love the grassroots effort, but we need your support, monetary or an in-kind donation would be greatly appreciated. The Coalition is a small group of dedicated people excited about what we have achieved to date and very much looking forward to cutting the ribbon and riding the new park. We are about 2/3rds there with the funds needed
The Waterbury Skatepark Coalition would appreciate you sharing this update with others. If interested in donating please go to our website. Waterburyskateparkvt.org
There is currently a brick campaign happening should you like to have a brick engraved and be part of the infrastructure of the new skatepark.
